The ragdoll effect - physics on CRYSIS

I really like 'ragdoll' physics, as in CSS (Counter Strike Source), and I wonder if CRYSIS will use such real-time physical simulations. Dunno if it's possible, or if it's already using something alike...

Re: The ragdoll effect - physics on CRYSIS

Iv heard that crysis uses some animation thingy where u put them to sleep. Ill put the steps of what happens.
1.A premade animation
2.premade animation goes into ragdoll
3.Ragdoll goes into a premade animation
4.back to normal pose

Anyone know if thats true?

Well, we haven't seen anyone actually wake up. tongue

And no doubt crysis will have one of the best, if not the best ragdoll physics to date.

Re: The ragdoll effect - physics on CRYSIS

@Slyer: In one of the videos.. (can't remember which one and no longer have my archives), ..we have seen a guy at least trying to get up but then he gets shot.

-- Crysis does have ragdoll. The question is how realistic they are. Most games have unrealistic ragdolls that just bounce around but those are much more fun imo tongue.
FarCry for an example, it had great ragdoll physics. The bodies weren't too light or heavy AND it also had some sort of adaptive ragdoll on living enemies too, which could be seen if an enemy was in a very steep slope or getting shot.

IMO, a good ragdoll is a ragdoll that is half-animated like the person/creature dying was still doing an action or looking like trying to stay on its feet while slipping into ragdoll, if you understand what I mean, hard to explain.

According to the videos it looks like Crysis ragdolls will be just right.

I know what you mean...the main problem with ragdoll is that when people die they just...y'know...die. And while the bodies, post-death are realistically...physiced, the actual period in which they die is kind of nonexistant. So, I agree, a combination of an animation with a transition to ragdoll would be much better.

Re: The ragdoll effect - physics on CRYSIS

Depends how you die, if you get a spear through the head, you're not going to stop and hold your guts. You'll just fall in floppy bone infested jelly.

But if you got shot in the chest, an animation would be good.

I agree, when things die, they don't just become limp and lifeless, instantly. It's actually pretty disappointing.

Re: The ragdoll effect - physics on CRYSIS

From most of the videos I've seen (all of them) at this stage all the animations are really glitchy (at this stage!) there are a couple when the dude wakes up but the animation just makes him bounce all over the place.

Agreed. It depends a lot on how you die. smile

Re: The ragdoll effect - physics on CRYSIS

well I seen all the videos for crysis and the ragdoll looks pretty solid, the soldiers have a realistic amount of weight to them. I have seen in one video where a soldier is kill near a fence and instead of going through the fence he leaned against it realistically. Ragdoll is a must have in any game but now the only difference between different ragdolls is the realism.
BF2 has a pretty bad ragdoll system where the hold body goes limp and even after that it goes crazy like it was being shaken.

Now remember Cevat Yurli said he wants Crysis to be the best first person shooter of all time, so we can safely assume he intends on delivering that as best he can.

The ragdolls in crysis has good weight . In a video he shoots a guy and he like falls on his knees, and falls over but its all ragdoll. it looks really good.

Re: The ragdoll effect - physics on CRYSIS

From the videos i've seen its pretty bad, hopefully still development stages though.
The guy pushed up against the fence is spastic, that wasn't meant to happy, his ragdoll pretty much froze so he ended up looking like he was trying to take a dump behind a fence.
I did see one funny one though, a guy died and fell backwards onto a car and knocked his head on the side and bounced a little, looked really good (funny too, not that death is funny.. if anything, its hilarious tongue)

Oblivion had a retarded floaty slow motion rag doll effect I didnt like, I want the bad guy to hit the ground hard like you would in RL

hahah, imagine crysis with bf2's ragdoll physics (which are pretty bad). Arms would be twisting all over the place
